One of the world’s largest producers of contact lenses will spend tens of millions of dollars to bolster its operations in upstate New York, state and company officials announced.
CooperVision will spend over $38 million to remodel and expand a packaging and distribution facility in the Rochester suburb of West Henrietta, and another $24 million to renovate its manufacturing processes in nearby Scottsville.
The company said the $62 million initiative would help meet the rising demand for contact lenses worldwide, as well as accommodate a growing product portfolio. The projects are expected to create more than 170 new jobs.
The company plans to also pursue LEED certification as part of the 150,000-square-foot warehouse expansion. The West Henrietta facility ships more than 1 billion lenses per year.
“Embracing and implementing sophisticated technologies is also essential for our Scottsville contact lens manufacturing facility, which is a jewel in our global network of production sites,” CooperVision President Jerry Warner said in the announcement.
The state could provide the company with a tax incentive package worth up to $1.5 million, provided CooperVision meets its hiring goals. CooperVision expects the distribution center project to be completed by next summer and the factory overhaul to wrap up by the end of next year.
