After first appearing in the MCU in 2011, Thor is one of the longest-standing characters in the Marvel universe and it goes without saying he’s seen his fair share of action in that time.
Thor has even lost an eye for his efforts but fans heading to the cinema to see Thor: Love And Thunder have been left with questions as the God of Thunder’s eyes are seemingly back to normal in the latest Marvel entry.
So how did Thor get his eye back ahead of Love And Thunder and how did he lose it in the first place?
*WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame*
Thor lost his eye in 2017 film Thor: Ragnarok while fighting his sister, Hela.
Hela, the Goddess of Death, emerged as the villain of the third Thor film after Odin passed away, allowing her to escape the prison she had been held captive in for years.
She quickly set about conquering Asgard to claim its throne and, after some antics on the planet Sakar, Thor returns for a dramatic final confrontation.
During the battle, Hela strikes Thor with her sword, resulting in him losing his right eye, mirroring what happened to Odin, their father.
After fighting the climactic battle with a darkened wound, Thor ends the film with an eye patch, a look he carries into Avengers: Infinity War.
Thor received a new bionic eye from Rocket Racoon in Avengers: Infinity War.
After the Asgardian ship is attacked by Thanos at the start of the film, Thor is left floating in space until the Guardians Of The Galaxy arrive to inspect the wreckage.
They bring him onboard and quickly put a plan together to stop Thanos, with Thor travelling to Niðavellir with Rocket and Groot to have a new weapon forged.
Knowing Thor will have to be at full strength to fight Thanos, Rocket gives the God of Thunder the bionic replacement and reveals he stole it from someone on Contraxia whom he also won a bet with.
It takes a moment for Thor to become accustomed to his new eye, which is orange, a different colour from his blue left eye.
However, as fans have noticed in Thor: Love And Thunder, the bionic eye appears to have changed colour in the latest film and is now blue to match the original colour.
Despite only being a minor detail, fans have quickly picked up on the tweaks to Thor’s appearance in Love and Thunder.
One fan on Twitter wrote: “They never explained how Thor’s right eye magically went from orange to blue all of a sudden.”
Another echoed that message: “I hate that they ditched Thor’s orange eye from Infinity War and Endgame. It was a really nice tribute to Heimdall. Really just feels like nobody notified Taika about it and he never noticed it in the films.”
This fan believes Thor should not have got his new eye: “I sort of wished MCU kept Thor having an eyepatch.”
“No one ever talks about it, but Thor losing an eye has to be the most pointless thing to be written in Thor Ragnarok just to get a new one in the next movie,” commented this fan.
Another Twitter fan said: “Worst thing they did was make Thor’s right eye blue again.”
“So did they just forget Thor lost an eye or what?” this fan wrote.
And finally, this fan pondered the reason behind the eye-colour change: “So in Infinity War, Thor gets a new eye from Rocket but it’s a brown eye and in Love And Thunder both his eyes are blue again so I wonder if they’ll explain it or if he just didn’t want to wear contacts in one eye.”
Marvel Studios‘ Thor: Love And Thunder is out now in cinemas after releasing in the UK on Thursday, July 7, 2022 and following in the US on July 8.
